2009 Kids Expo Activities

Overview

Loving our Home… the Earth

            Community partnerships come together for a Children’s Sensory Exploration of Environmental Awareness and Issues. Discover in a cave, dream with clouds, tend a garden, do the Green Trail Sustainability Hunt, or be a part of the Community Arts Project. Engage and let your creative self shine as you learn how to care more for the earth we all share. 

             Educational partners providing hands on activities include The Brain Gym , KY River Authority, Ravenwood Center Eco Heart Programs, Wild Wood, USDA Soil Conservation, Living landsandwater.org, WWW.350.ORG, Children And Nature Network (www.childrenandnatureorg ), Lexington Living Arts and Science Center and more. And while you’re in the Kids Expo, your family can register to win a One Night Stay at a Kentucky State Park!


Ongoing Exhibits & Activities Include

Recycling Drop Off – Drop off your recyclables at any time during the Expo

“TOPS OFF” Recycling Education Game - Guess the Number of Caps in a Container for a chance to win a prize.

Explore Wind Energy Exhibit – See The Explorium Children’s Museum’s wind energy exhibit.

Ravenwood Center’s Eco Heart Program

Tell your own Story by weaving your part of a community art piece called ”Fabric of our Lives”  and add your pledge for helping the earth. Also paint the next “Foot Steps in Peace” - a floor art project created in Central Kentucky.


American Heart Association ”The Start Heart Walk” & The Explorium

Pick up a Pedway Map in the Kids EXPO for your green walk through the pedways connecting the Lexington Center with surrounding buildings. You can make a complete loop via a marked trail with distance markers and take the first steps toward a healthier life. While on your green walk, stop and visit The Explorium in Victorian Square and see their first-rate energy exhibits, including UK’s Solar Car from 10-4 on Saturday.

 

Anthony Redfeather Nava: American Indian Educator, Entertainer and Artist

From the Pascua Yaqui and Keetoowah Indian Nations, Anthony has been teaching in the Kentucky and Southern Indiana area for 15 years. "Bridging the Gap of Diversity", it is his goal to teach children and adults alike of the importance of Oral Traditions (storytelling), Social Structure, Family Structure, Economics (trade), Medicines, Foods (Seed saving, gathering, hunting, preparation and cooking) and Music. Anthony explains the many types of indigenous musical instruments and songs. Using rattles, flutes and drums, he teaches the importance of these instruments in the traditions and culture of the past and why they are still used today. Sun Space Exhibits & Activities

The Kids Expo experience spills over into the New “Sun Space” this year featuring visits by LEX TRAN “REX” and Fayette County Police Officers on Segways. Experience story telling by Anthony “Red Feather” Nava, watch broom making with the Kentucky Broom Lady, view state contest winning Green Team Video’s, and more.

Environmental Education Workshops – For 5th Grade through Adult (CEUs available for educators)      Saturday Only – Room: Elkhorn A - Student Attendance forms available in Kids Expo.

10–11:30 am - Are you smarter than a Fifth Grader? Environmental literacy for everyone

1–2:30 pm - A Drop in the Bucket: Understanding how water works for you

3–4:30 pm - Is it Getting Hot in Here? The Science and Civics of Global Climate Change


2:00–2:20 pm Sat. & Sun. - “Keep it on” Waste Busters Program Performance

            Bluegrass PRIDE and Lexington Children’s Theater present the “Keep it on” Waste Busters Program performance. Visit the Green Stand stage and be part of this interactive and educational presentation.

 

5:00 - 5:30 Sat. & Sun. - “Energy Parade for Kids”

Children and adults generate energy and excitement as they parade though expo and outside exhibits in costume with props. Come by the Kids Expo before 5 pm to make props, then meet at the Green Stand stage in the Kids Expo by 5:15 to dress for the parade.
